The Cherington course at Minchinhampton is one of the three courses to have been played on more than Tour. (Bude & North Cornwall and Downes Crediton being the others).
It was first used in 2004 as a stopping point on route to Monmouth where seven of the eight players that year scored at least 33 points and Stuart set the Tour record of 45.
The course was back on the rota in 2008 as the deciding 18 holes in the Cotswolds. It was another good scoring day with all four of the competitors scoring at least 33 again and Ben W clinching his third title with 39.
Once again I have little memory of this course but looking at the course guide (Par 72 - 6,850 yards) it seems that if you can hit it long and straight you're going to get chances to make a good score. At the same time if you're not much off line you're not going to get penalised too much and have a chance to recover.
The fairness of the course is reflected in the best scores:
45 points - Stuart (off 31) 2004
39 points - Simon (off 15) 2004
39 points - Ben W (off 11) 2008
37 points - Ben W (off 8) 2004
37 points - Kevin (off 16) 2004
37 points - Brian (off 16) 2008
36 points - James (off 30) 2004
Any suggestions as to why the scoring here has been so good? Any favourite holes? Comments box or email to Paul please.
