The course is situated at the southern end of Weston-Super-Mare and was modernised in 1922 by the renowned golf architect Dr. Alister Mackenzie* who was also responsible for Augusta National.
I can't remember what the weather was like in 2010 but the majority of us scored better in 2012 when there was a cold, overcast start that soon turned hot. Bruce blazed a trail on the first occasion with 37 points put Ben F owned it on our latest visit scoring 43.
I'm a fan of this course. There's lots of different challenges here, one of which was walking through a caravan park to get to the fifth although that was missing in 2012. Some of it looks easier than it plays, club selection is particularly interesting on the par 3 seventh.
The bunkers are well placed, there are varying degrees of rough, there's out of bounds here and there, and the mounds and undulations of the greens are making you think on every shot. The signature hole is the 15th which is apparently based on the Road Hole at St Andrews. I must admit I never made that connection.I thought the clubhouse grub was pretty good too!

*Mackenzie's rules for an ideal golf course are:
-
Should be arranged in two loops of 9 holes to create different wind conditions throughout the round
-
Should have a mix of long par fours, drive and pitch holes and at
least four par threes to create variety in the type of shots during any
round
-
The Greens and Fairways should be undulating, without steep hills for the golfer to climb
-
There should be a minimum of blind approach shots
-
The emphasis should be placed on natural beauty, not on artificial features
-
There is always an alternative route for the weaker player, yet a sufficient test for the plus-handicap player
- There should be a complete absence of the annoyance caused by searching for lost balls
Did you enjoy it as much as I did? Let me know.
